This week in Brooklyn: Weird World curated by Aimee Lusty at Booklyn Art Gallery.

Weird World is an exhibition of artists’ books, photography and drawings exploring anthropological portraiture through an artistic lens, with an emphasis on the unseen, the occult, the weird, the wild, and the subversive. These artists present rare observational studies of various subcultures, ranging from punks and teenage ravers, members of the Westboro Baptist Church, to minority tribes of the Yunnan Province in China. These portraits provide an intimate yet omnipresent view of these seemingly exclusive unapproachable communities in their “natural habitats.” Reporting through an artist’s eye offers more than photojournalism, allowing their creativity to guide their observations, incorporate digital manipulation, and present their findings in unique sculptural formats.
Coinciding with this exhibition we are hosting open-call for the exhibition zine. The artists in exhibition will curate a selection of photographs, drawings and text to be published in a full-color publication alongside their own artwork, to be released at a closing party for the exhibition. For information on the open call please visit here.

The show opens October 6th and closes November 18th.
We’ve got a few artists in this show and simply can’t wait. At the favorite spot, Booklyn in Greenpoint.
From Jason Kachadourian:

This Saturday marks the completion of a project that I have been working on for almost 4 years. In that time I have been collecting editions from artists that I admire, and compiling them into a series of 150 packets called Awkhold.

Booklyn Artist Alliance has been kind enough to host the release of this publication, and has also asked me to organize an accompanying show, which includes many of the Awkhold artists.

The start date is March 3rd 2012, reception from 7-10PM.

The location is 37 Greenpoint Avenue, between Franklin and West, it’s on the 4th floor.

Start your Saturday with a couple Brooklyn Brews, art on the walls and familiar faces!

Please check out the website for images, and below for more information. Awkhold will also be a part of this event on the 10th.

Hope to see you there!

Awkhold

March 3-April 1, 2012
The Booklyn Art Gallery is pleased to present Awkhold, a publication, and corresponding show, featuring: Annemieke Beemster Leverenz, Christine Buckton Tillman, Sam Kalda, Andrew Liang, Aimee Lusty, Becca McCharen, Asa Osborne, Jan Razauskas, Jason Roy, Ryan Jacob Smith, Crystal Stokowski and Erin Womack.
Awkhold is a portfolio of unbound contributions by 12 artists, produced in an edition of 150, on the condition that each artist is responsible for reproducing his or her own work.
The artists are not given any conceptual or stylistic theme. Instead, the work is united in its expression of each artist’s process when confronted with the challenge of producing multiples. Alike in their willingness to participate, the artists nonetheless work in varied styles and media; their submissions range from 150 photocopied prints to series of 150 unique drawings.
A companion exhibition at Booklyn Artist Alliance works to provides further context for its printed counterpart. The same twelve artists were invited to submit work that will interact with or inform their piece in the publication, widening the lens of the project.
Curated by Jason Kachadourian.
Opening Reception: March 3, 2012
