Over the summer I curated a group show, BIG MOUTH: Contemporary Feminist Voices in Art + Illustration, with BRAIN WAVES artist and colleague Lauren Denitzio. K Funk’s comics were a humorous highlight of the show for sure; their work is among the many up-and-coming, young comic artists in New York.

OPENING TONIGHT AT BRAIN WAVES: LAUREN DENITZIO’S GET IT TOGETHER #2.
Get It Together #2 is the latest issue of Lauren Denitzio’s art and illustration zine featuring work based on mantras and motivational phrases.  This issue was created while the she was the March Artist in Residence at AS220 in Providence, Rhode Island and focuses on self-employed friends in that city along with their continuing motivation to make a living through self-initiated ventures.  This is the culmination of a drawing and printmaking series based on studio visits and interviews on the inspiration behind and benefits of being your own boss. (24 pages - cover is offset printed on cover stock)
Denitzio spoke with AS220 about the zine before its release at her open studio there:

In late 2009 I put out a zine called “Get it Together”. My idea was to illustrate mantras and motivational phrases contributed by my friends. Last summer I underwent open heart surgery and though I’m now doing fine, the ordeal only magnified the influence of productivity and mantras in my work, motivating me to create the zine.

I had the pleasure of attending Denitzio and studiomate Julia Norton’s most recent Open Studio at Cedar Mansion. Here’s a sneak peak at what else Lauren’s been up to, including some of the other work from her residency at AS220.
